Ahh Headers... One of the things that everyone is drawn to add to their rig. Well, a few weeks ago I took the attitude of "Let's Do It!" and did it. :) After looking at the choices (Downey, Edelbrock and TRD) I ended up going with a set of ceramic coated Downey's. Technically, "low price" wasn't the reason, but had something to do with it. I just couldn't see paying $1000 for a set of TRD's. Edelbrocks seemed good as well, but I could find a lot more info online from folks that had installed the Downeys. I got mine from Truck Performance Center for $360 shipped, which included a new collector and crossover pipe. I'm happy... That's almost $300 less than what Downey sells the set for direct. It's been well documented on the 'net that installing these isn't for the faint of heart. There are issues with VERY close quarters and the infamous "dag nabbed crossover pipe". After talking with a local general maintenance shop, and even truthfully telling them what folks have said about the install, they estimated $300 in labor. I made a deal with them to cap the overruns to 30% and off the truck went! Fast forward to 36 hours later... The shop is ready to kill me... heh. "told ya' so!". :) All totalled, they estimate that it took one guy about 10 hours to do. I got a lot of statements like "You have no idea what we had to do to get that old pipe out!". Well, actually, yes I do - hence my having spent the last THREE MONTHS prepping you for this job! But, they held to their estimate, though at the top end, and the truck is home. While the truck was there, I also had them rework the 3" catback that they put in a few months ago down to 2 1/2". The 3" pipe is just too large for this small of an engine. It turns out that the dude screwed up (his admission) and only ran 2 1/2" pipe from the muffler out, the cat to the muffler is still 3". Funny how the paperwork clearly says 2 1/2"... CRAP! That's all for now... But obviously the story isn't over. sigh. They look fast standing still! Collector and crossover The business end...   They're In!
