First off, to be clear, the controller on the shipping Voyagers is not the Tactex pad that was originally
planned. There were too many issues to overcome with the Tactex pad.
The touchpad controller in Voyager is based on a design that Bob had done many years ago. This controller is
completely analog (the Tactex was fiber optic based with a digital output).
Both controllers respond to X & Y axis position, but where the 3rd channel for the Tactex was pressure, the
3rd channel for the touchpad is area. This is a subtle, but important distinction because they handle
differently.
For the first 10-20% of the controllers response to "area", you will not find a difference in feel. This is
because a light touch on the pad with a single finger will cover very little area. Touching harder will
"squish" your finger and cause more area to be covered. Continuing to push (with a single finger) after this
point will not increase the controller's output.
To move past this point, you have to cover more area of the pad - which can easily be done by placing more
fingers on the pad.
It takes some getting used to in order to get the most response out of it. But it's very cool.
